Dream a Reality by Corrina Joyner and Jessica Clay

WAG–an acronym for Watkins Arcade Gallery–is located in suite 77 upstairs in the historic Arcade and is open the first Saturday evening of the month during each Art Crawl (from 6:00pm-9:00pm), and by appointment.

Watkins College of Art, Design & Film presents Dream A Reality, a multi-media exhibition by Watkins Fine Art junior Corrina Joyner and alumna Jessica Clay investigating the transformable space of the downtown Nashville convention center, at its downtown gallery WAG during the April 2 edition of the First Saturday Art Crawl.

Through a series of dérive-style walks and site visits, Joyner and Clay expose methods of interaction with the exaggerated architecture of the 1.2 million-square-foot Music City Center, which was completed in 2013. A metropolitan facility that is both public and private property, the convention center is a permanent structure in the city’s physical identity while continuing to remain in flux and subject to a continually shifting body of transient communities. As the artists navigate this expansive and gleaming space, they uncover hidden truths from within the architecture.

Traversing this public area has political implications as Joyner and Clay assert their physical presence, taking up space and creating potential purposes. They explore the set of politicized structures that exist within this particular establishment that is concerned with the tourist, not the local. These investigations of the Music City Center and its malleable spaces manifest in works of video, print and sculpture that facilitate viewers to reconsider their agency in this rapidly changing environment.

Corrina Joyner is an interdisciplinary artist presently studying for her BFA in Fine Art at Watkins. She serves as chair of the student-run artist collective, Company H. Recent exhibitions include the 2016 Currey Juried Student Show at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Gallery and Co. H’s council member show at OPEN Gallery (opening April 2, also in the Arcade).

A 2013 graduate of Watkins with a BFA in Fine Art, Jessica Clay is currently working on several related projects that focus on the interplay between place-specific histories and present transformative time. Her work is research-based and comes out of interactions with the world. Recent exhibitions include Say It With Flowers at the Kimberly-Klark gallery in Queens, NY, and 507 Hagan Street at the Packing Plant in Nashville.

WAG joins approximately 20 participating Art Crawl galleries along Fifth Avenue of the Arts and upstairs in the Historic Arcade. Admission is free, and the Nashville Downtown Partnership provides two free shuttles traveling among the venues.
