Family Program: Design Your Record Label

Memphis-based Sun Records, started by Sam Phillips in 1952, originally rose to prominence with R&B hits such as “Just Walkin’ in the Rain” (The Prisonaires). The Sun label ushered in rock & roll in the mid-1950s with Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right,” Carl Perkins’s “Blue Suede Shoes,” and other classics. In addition to their unique sound, Sun releases featured an iconic design on its discs. Learn about Phillips and Sun Records and listen to music that made this label a rockin’ success. Then, create your own record label, and design an iconic logo and image for your own 45-rpm releases. What symbols represent your music? Taylor Swift Education Center. Ages 5 and up. In support of the exhibit Flyin’ Saucers Rock & Roll: The Cosmic Genius of Sam Phillips.
