The cultural and political climate of the late 1960s and early ’70s provided a supercharged atmosphere for creativity among Nashville musicians. In 1969, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs ended their musical partnership, and Scruggs formed a band with his sons to explore new rock and folk repertoire. This Austin City Limits performance features Scruggs; his sons Gary, Randy, and Steve; and Jim Murphy and Jody Maphis. The band performs “Lady in the First Degree,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven (but Nobody Wants to Die),” and Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” Offered in support of Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City presented by Citi.
