Grass Fed Sundays | Old Time Music Affair, Grits & Soul
Grass Fed Sundays presents Old Time Music Affair and Grits & Soul, live on The Sutler stage!
Old Time Music Affair: Based out of Asheville, Old Time Music Affair (formely Locust Honey String Band) is an all female band that plays “heart-breakin’ country harmonies and raging old-time fiddle tunes.” Started in 2011 by Chloe Edmonstone, who plays fiddle, guitar, and sings, Old Time Music Affair is her way of incorporating her wide-spread musical interests, from vocal-harmonies, bluegrass, and Old-Time Fiddle, into music. Old Time Music Affair also consists of Meredith Watson on guitar, slide guitar, and vocals, Hilary Hawke on banjo and vocals, and Grace Van’t Hof on banjo and vocals. Each of the respective members brings their eclectic experience and influence in the Old-Time, Bluegrass, and Pre-war Blues traditions to both their original material and the traditional tunes of the American Southeast. With an emphasis on lively arrangements, vocal harmonies, and an ever rotating instrumentation, Old Time Music Affair puts on a dynamic, spirited show that is memorable for anyone.
Grits & Soul: Grits & Soul was formed back in early 2011, when members Anna Kline and John Looney crossed paths. After hearing John’s magnificent mandolin licks and mountainous singing, Anna proposed the join forces, and the rest is history in the making. Mere days after penning the title track to their first album, “Flood Waters” was featured on a local news segment, and aired on NBC affiliates covering the devastating Mississippi River Flood throughout the South, catapulting Soul & Grits into a national recognition. Though they would always have a heart for the Mississippi bayou, Anna and John were itching to kick things up a notch and relocated to the art-centric Asheville, NC in February 2012. In their relatively brief time together, Grits & Soul has gained an extensive notoriety, playing large scale festivals and showcases, including: SERFA, IMBA, Merlefest, Knoxville’s Rhythm and Blooms Festival, Raleigh’s ‘Cuegrass Festival, Albino Skunk Fest, and in 2015 are scheduled to play the Suwanee Springfest. Highlighting Anna’s powerful voice, and John’s prowess as a talented picker, their music together is evident of gifted songwriters. Their hard driving Bluegrass inspired tracks to their slow-burning bluesy ballads, Grits & Soul are an unforgettable musical experience, finely honing their own unique sound. Their brand of “Soulgrass,” steeped in mountain Bluegrass and Country twang, has drenched their authenticity and seething energy in all things soulfully Southern. You can’t help but clap your hands, stomp your feet, and sing along!
