Ancient Irish sports played by teams and players from nine cities across the Southeast and Midwest come to Donelson.
The Nashville Gaelic Athletic Club (NGAC) hosts players and teams from eight cities across the Midwest and Southeast on April for the 2nd Annual Music City Invitational. The tournament, located in Donelson at 3135 Heartland Drive, will feature the ancient Irish sports of hurling and camogie.
Hurling, a fast-paced, high-scoring field game, is the national sport of Ireland, where it is predominantly played, but is also found in parts of the world where Irish immigrants settled. While many Americans have yet to discover the ancient game, which has been played for over three thousand years, most are familiar with derivatives hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and even golf. The Nashville club was founded in 2013 and has grown to include more than fifty members in a short time.
The opening ceremonies take place at 9 a.m., featuring Irish and American National Anthems, bagpipers, special guests, and more. Games kick off at 9:30 am. Each team will play a minimum of three matches throughout the day, with one hurling team and one camogie team crowned champs at the end. An afterparty will take place at Harp and Fiddle on Demonbreun Street at 8 p.m. where trophies will be distributed.
