Opening with an uptempo performance of “Ring Of Fire,” this late 60s look at the emerging icon intercuts rollicking performances with vérité scenes of life with June both on the road and at home in the studio, all in the wake of his maturing success. Robert Elfstrom’s cameras capture the humanity of a deep-rooted man with a kind ear for aspiring performers.
Featuring exemplary live performances of staples like “Five Feet High and Rising” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” this documentary’s many high points include an intimate rendering of “Great Speckled Bird” and positively revelatory footage of Cash and Bob Dylan recording “One Too Many Mornings” during the fabled Nashville Skyline sessions.
