With Sonny Burgess, J. M. Van Eaton, W. S. “Fluke” Holland, and Jerry Phillips, moderated by Peter Guralnick. Arkansas native Sonny Burgess launched his musical career in 1956, on Sam Phillips’s Sun Records, with the ferocious rockabilly tunes “We Wanna Boogie” and “Red Headed Woman.” Drummer J. M. Van Eaton provided the backbeat on a long list of Sun classics, including Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire” and Billy Lee Riley’s “Flyin’ Saucers Rock & Roll.” Drummer Fluke Holland worked in the studio with Phillips on numerous Carl Perkins (“Blue Suede Shoes”) and Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”) hits and played on the historic Million Dollar Quartet session. Sam Phillips’s son Jerry recorded “Cadillac Man” (1966)—one of the last notable records issued on Sun—with the Jesters. Presented in support of the exhibition Flyin’ Saucers Rock & Roll: The Cosmic Genius of Sam Phillips. Phillips biographer and exhibit co-curator Peter Guralnick will moderate the panel. The program will be streamed live at countrymusichalloffame.org/streaming.
