The Intersection between Science and Religion

The Intersection between Science and Religion

On February 14 the Rev. Carmen Emerson will give the sermon on Evolution Sunday.  She is the new minister.  The church in Bellevue has celebrated this event for several years along with hundreds of churches and scientific organizations around the world. Evolution Weekend is the closest weekend to the February 12 birthday of Charles Darwin and an opportunity for serious discussion and reflection on the relationship between religion and science.

Some people define religion so narrowly that they are categorically opposed to evolutionary ideas and some of the findings of science.  Yet in the United States alone, more than 13,800 clergy of numerous denominations have signed the Clergy Letter, to openly state that belief in evolution is not a problem for them.

For example a United Methodist Church resolution opposes introduction of any faith-based theories such as creationism or intelligent design into public-school science curricula.  And a statement by a Lutheran Synod repeats these words from the Clergy Letter, “We urge public school leaders across this country to preserve the integrity of the science curriculum by affirming the teaching of the theory of evolution as a core component of human knowledge.” As of January, 405 Unitarian-Universalist clergy have signed a Unitarian version of the Letter.

The Reverend Carmen Emerson is a religious humanist with panentheistic leanings, who has been married to a devout atheist for three decades.
