Workshop: Lantern Making

at Platetone Printmaking, Paper and Book Arts, Nashville TN

Oct 09 - 10
Workshop: Lantern Making

Create a glow with your own handcrafted lanterns! In this workshop, you will start by printing on paper with an intuitive monoptrint process that will allow you to print textures and patterns or use leaves and other found items to create beautiful designs with ease. You may also cut images out of the paper to leave spaces for the light to shine through. You will then learn how to construct the paper you have designed into simple and complex lantern forms. The making of paper lanterns is a long tradition in Japan, and Nozomi will provide an introduction to the cultural and historical significance of lanterns in her home country.

Supplies for the workshop include one hanging light fixture and two LED flameless candles along with paper, ink etc. Students can expect to make three lanterns during the workshop. Beginner and advanced students are all welcome to register. Your one-of-a-kind lanterns will make great home décor and gifts!

Megan Little received her BA in visual arts from Houghton College in Western NY state and currently serves on Platetone’s board as Education Coordinator. She is a duel citizen of Canada and the USA and, along with printmaking, she enjoys traveling, writing stories for children and playing with her two cats.

Nozomi Takasu moved to the U.S. from Japan to study music in 2010, and later changed her major to Visual Art. She enjoys learning about the Japanese influence on Western art and is fascinated by different cultures from all over the world. She likes to use cultural motifs in her artwork. Nozomi loves nature and animals, especially bunnies!
