This workshop will focus on the issues that come up when writing about race. The workshop will focus less on technical matters of craft and more on issue of content and vision, on accuracy of perception and truth telling. A basic premise is that investigating race is crucial for writers working within the context of contemporary America and a global vision.
As a preparation for the workshop, participants will be sent three short readings, which will be sent by the Global Education Center upon registration.
Also, as an optional assignment before the workshop: Participants can write a piece about when they first became aware of their racial identity or when they confronted the issue of difference in some significant way. Please bring this piece to the workshop.
